蜡梅和梅花的“成名”也分早晚。蜡梅在宋代才被普遍栽培为一种观赏植物，而梅花受人关注的时间更久远。1975年，我国考古人员在安阳殷墟商代铜鼎中发现了梅核，这说明早在3000多年前，梅已用作食品。汉初，梅花就已经成为一种观赏性植物。《西京杂记》载：“汉初修上林苑，远方各献名果异树，有朱梅、胭脂梅”。
